Recap of the 2020 International Roofing Expo®

We are sure you have heard the 2020 International Roofing Exp® in Dallas broke the record with 17,060 people in attendance and 170,980 square feet of exhibit space with 541 companies. Our dessert and cordials reception held at Gilley’s also had a record-breaking attendance with more than 300 members, guests, competition students and prospective companies. It was a great opportunity to mix and mingle! Click here for photos.

Wednesday, Feb. 5, was a big day for the Roofing Alliance’s 2020 Construction Management Student Competition. The five finalist teams from Auburn University, Clemson University, Colorado State University, Texas A&M University and the University of Florida gave the final portion of their project—presenting their proposals to the judges acting as the owner and general contractor. The teams created companies interested in bidding to install a new roof system on the Ford Center, the indoor practice facility of the Dallas Cowboys. The teams had to convince the general contractor they could produce a quality product in a timely manner and at a competitive price.

After hearing all presentations and conducting a 10-minute question and answer session with each team, the judges determined this year’s winning teams. The first-place winner was Old Army Roofing from Texas A&M University; team members were Austin Davis (alternate), Kyler Hardison, Erbey Hernandez, Collin Rosser and Tyler Stivers (team captain).

A few elements set the Texas A&M University team ahead of the others, including a thorough understanding of the project; a well-prepared presentation; and a nice job responding to the judges’ questions. Their oral presentation scores combined with their written proposal scores determined their first-place position.

Colorado State University won second place for the third year in a row; team members were Mahoney Bajwa (alternate), Paul Cheever, Jake Peckham, Brandan Phelan (team captain) and Chris Vargas.

As first- and second-place winners, both teams received team trophies and scholarships for their schools, as well as individual team member trophies.

The judges selected Samuel Short from Auburn University as this year’s Best Individual Presenter.

We want to thank everyone contributing to the success of this year’s competition, including the Construction Management Schools Initiative Committee members, team mentors, judges, faculty and, of course, the students for all their hard work! We look forward to our seventh competition and team presentations, which will take place during NRCA’s 134th Annual Convention and 2021 International Roofing Expo,® Feb. 24-26, 2021, in Las Vegas.
